This story was reported over the course of more than a year while the case went through the court system. The article was reported mainly using public records — including court documents, deputy reports  and voicemail recordings — and phone, email and in-person interviews. I reached out to experts across the county to learn as much as possible about sulcata tortoises and made repeated attempts to talk to the defendant and his attorney. What started out as an interesting crime brief turned into a larger story looking at the sanctity of life and the value placed upon the life of a tortoise. Read it here.
